Out of all the pointless bits of who gives a fuck that normal human beings don’t give a shit about, the spelling to use when referring to either a car or a motorcycle is a hill a ton of insufferable dorks want to die on.

Bimmer=car, Beemer=bike, apparently. I was surprised there to learn there was a difference, too, and that to mix the two up is the greatest of blasphemies.

Well, it’s the greatest of blasphemies to that one asshole every group of car guys knows who pronounces BMW “Bay-Em-Vay”.

How do you pronounce it, then? “Bee-Emm-Doubleyou”? “Bee-Emm-Vee”? “Bumvvv”?

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > PanchoVilleneuve ST
12/09/2015 at 09:49

Kinja'd!!!0

Before BMW made cars, their motorcycles competed with BSA motorcycles which were referred to as “beezers”, so BMW’s moto’s were coined “beemers”. Since assholes go way back in history, someone of what was probably a similar caliber to the person you encountered, could not deal with calling the 4 wheeled variant the same name. Hence Bimmers.

Forums...great source of information, but also home to copious amounts of assholes.

Kinja'd!!! PanchoVilleneuve ST > TheAnswerIsAlwaysCitroën

Kinja'd!!!14

Bee-Em-Double-You because I do not speak German as a part of everyday life and the native language of the initials does not change how they are pronounced in English. Pronouncing the letters like they do in German is the automotive equivalent of the person who goes to the Olive Garden and puts on a Super Mario accent to order the Spaghetti Primavera.

I was hoping it was some official corporate-mandated marketing thing like how there’s always that one guy who goes “actually, the plural of LEGO (in all caps) is LEGO or LEGO bricks” whenever someone says Legos, which while lame and sad for anybody who doesn’t work for LEGO, is at least official.

This is somehow worse.

Kinja'd!!! TheAnswerIsAlwaysCitroën > PanchoVilleneuve ST
12/09/2015 at 09:58

Fair enough. I think “Bee-Emm-Vee” would be acceptable as well, but it doesn’t seem to be common in English speaking countries.

For our next game, let’s discuss how to pronounce “Porsche”.

Haha yea, definitely worse. I didn’t know that about “Legos” but it makes sense. We should give it a try on a LEGO forum. Somehow I bet no one gets butthurt about it.

Considering that correcting someones grammar is a social faux pas, correcting someone on their misuse of unofficial “enthusiast only” terminology is beyond assholic.

It’s funny, I work for a German automotive company in the US and we officially pronounce the name the “American” way, but many people use the German pronunciation around the office (especially if big wigs from Germany are around).

In case you were wondering.

German: “Zed-Eff”
American: “Zee-Eff”

I use both pretty interchangeably, because it really doesn’t matter. haha

I am pretty staunch about the pronunciation of Porsche though.

That doesn’t count, because it’s a proper noun, and despite Clarkson going out of his way to deny this fact to any proper noun that didn’t originate in Britain in that adorable “we used to have an Empire you know, we were kind of a big deal a while back” way so many Brits do, there is a correct pronunciation of it.

If we’re going to discuss anything Porsche related, it should be how pointing out that the reason why the ignition is on the left side of the wheel instead of the right is so that you can start the car with your left hand while putting it into gear with your right because it’s quicker in a race that uses a Le Mans-style start to every new passenger in your Porsche does not change the fact that you are an orthodontist, and that your new sports car will not provide the injection of youthful vigor you so desperately hope will banish the horrible realization that you’re an incredibly uninteresting 61 year old who could have been an artist or poet or explorer, but instead spends every working day telling 12 year olds that you’re disappointed by their lack of retainer usage.

I can’t agree with this comment more. When a.) English-speakers will not have any idea what I said, because the sounds coming out of my mouth have no connection to the sounds they would imagine when they look at the text, and b.) I certainly won’t get it right anyway, so those native speakers would laugh at me anyway if they overheard, then what is the use of me pretentiously attempting to pronounce words from a foreign language the way I imagine its native speakers pronounce them? At least if I say them the way an English-speaker would phonetically pronounce the written words, the people to whom I’m taking will have some idea what I’m trying to say.
